"I've never been intimidated by anyone," John Silber once told me. "I don't know the meaning of the word." I never doubted it. Twice I worked for the former Boston University president, who died Thursday at 86. (Snip) Several years later, with both law school and my exceedingly brief legal career behind me, I returned for a full-time job with the exalted title of Assistant to the President. However lofty the title, reality was something else. Having John Silber as a boss, I quickly learned, was an ongoing adventure in being put in one's place.

Comments:
This piece has some wonderful stories about Silber. He was in the news a lot in the 1980s and 1990s but I haven't heard anything about him since then. He was a good guy.

I went to Boston University in the late 70's when he was president and turning the school around in amazing fashion. He was hated by the hippies and the professors. He wanted excellence from his professors, fired them if they weren't, and we can't have that. He did not knuckle under to political correctness. Ever.

I spent a good part of a day, one-on-one, with this remarkable man in the late 1980s. He had come to my office regarding BU's program for the military in Europe. He was business-like and cordial. We took the Metro to the Pentagon for a face-to-face with a (my)three-star general. The result was not what he had wanted, but he remained very polite to me on the return to my office, sharing with me a bit of his younger years in Texas. Had he possedd two "good" arms, Silber's career might well have been military....in which case he could well have been the four-star boss of my three-star general.

I lived in MA most of my life, and remember John Silber well. He ran for governor as a Democrat, but didn't win partly due to his George S. Patton style of dealing with everything. He lost to Willaim "Pink Floyd" Weld, who wasn't really all that bad a governor in a Democrat controlled state like MA, but was a little bit on the odd side. Silber didn't pull any punches whatsoever, and couldn't have cared less who he offended in the process. He took BU from an also ran to one of the largest and most successful universitys in the area. He was a good guy, and I doubt that you'll ever see another one like him.

My weekend column muses on the glorious future foreseen by Obama?s speech to the General Assembly. But I?ve also been struck by the following passage on the late Chris Stevens, mysteriously asphyxiated by a spontaneous class-action movie review, as every government official from the Commander-in-Chief to his UN Ambassador has so persuasively argued. Last week, the President paid tribute to Stevens thus: (Snip) Chris Stevens loved his work. He took pride in the country he served, and he saw dignity in the people that he met. Only citizens of the United States can legally vote in federal elections. Yes, he made a stupid remark, and as a result, what should have been an easy Senate win turned into a hotly contested race. He apologized profusely, but rather than come to his aid, Republicans of every stripe denounced him and called for his resignation. This is idiotic. When it comes to the film Innocence of Muslims, our government and the media use a narrative mired in contradictions and false statements provided by the filmmaker, who himself is an untrustworthy source. If we stick to what can be proven we might obtain the possibility that terror supporters produced the film. Muhammad Al Dura and Paliwood are two cases in point, showing the type of stunts used by Palestinian terrorists. So lets examine facts instead of the filmmaker?s fiction:

S'pore green building movement takes to the streets | Eco-Business ...

The green building industry needs green attitudes from occupants to be effective. Image: SIEW.

Green buildings may have risen in popularity in Singapore in the past few years, but such buildings are ?green? only if their users are too.

This is why the local green building movement is moving beyond physical walls to reach out to the man in the street, Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) president Tai Lee Siang told Eco-Business in a recent interview.

Strong government leadership here has enabled building owners to adopt newfangled green technology to make their buildings more efficient. ?But the industry is mindful that if the people who occupy them do not have a ?green attitude? to conserving energy and resources, such buildings will not function well,? he said.

The SGBC, an industry association with more than 300 members, is thus focusing its efforts to include engaging the wider community, so that ?green lifestyles can complement green buildings to achieve greater results?, he said.

For example, SGBC is collaborating with technology giant IBM and the Ministry of Education on ?Project Green Insights?, which will raise awareness of energy efficiency with schools in Singapore. Education is important, said Mr Tai, as green attitudes are best adopted from a young age and the youth will become the future generation of building users.

SGBC?s industry members, such as property developers Lend Lease, are also developing green leases where tenants have to agree to certain environmental targets when they lease a retail space.

This focus on the community will be the main theme at this year?s upcoming International Green Building Conference (IGBC), organized by SGBC, which will feature activities that reach out to tenants, consumers and the youth.

To be held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 10 to 12 October, the conference will convene more than 50 international experts from 25 countries to speak on green buildings and sustainable lifestyles.

National building regulator, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), is also set to unveil new Green Mark schemes for big users of energy such as supermarkets, retailers and data centres at the conference.

The Green Mark is a system developed by the BCA to rate buildings on their environmental performance. Singapore currently has more than 1,200 Green Mark buildings.

Director of BCA?s technology development group, Mr Tan Tian Chong noted in statement that since its launch in 2005, the Green Mark scheme has ?provided a meaningful differentiation of buildings in the real estate market.?

?Indeed, a Green Mark building is internationally recognized as having best practices in environmental design and performance. This can have positive value-add for building owners as well as end-users as they will be living and working in energy-efficient, greener and healthier environments. We will extend the Green Mark scheme to new frontiers to make Singapore an even greener and healthier place,? he said.

BCA also plans to introduce a web-based carbon calculator that will help building professionals determine the footprint of major construction materials and energy used in buildings.

To ensure that the industry is held to high standards, the SGBC will announce at the conference a new Green Services Certification Scheme, which will cover related sectors such as architectural design, mechanical and electrical services, energy management and consultancy, and contractors.

It is an extension of an existing Green Building Product Certification, launched in 2010, which certifies green building products. SGBC has certified a total of 144 green products to date.

Mr Tai noted that products are only one aspect of what makes a building green. Service providers, who help create such buildings, are also important. ?So the new scheme will create a certain benchmark? on which these providers can be certified,? he said.

Some 10,000 people are expected to attend October?s conference. It will be held together with Bex Asia 2012, an annual regional building expo focusing on eco-friendly products and solutions. Both events are part of the annual Singapore Green Building Week.

Some notable figures due to speak include Professor Jacqueline Cramer, Director of Utrecht Sustainability Institute and former Minister of Housing, Social Planning and the Environment of the Netherlands, Ms Jane Henley, chief executive of the World Green Building Council and the founder of Earth Hour, Mr Andy Ridley.

As last spring?s college graduates settle into first jobs, chances are that many also are learning to use their first credit cards. Getting your first credit card can feel like an adult rite of passage. On the plus side, having ? and using ? a credit line can put you on the road to building a good credit history. This, in turn, will make it easier in the future for you to qualify for a car loan, a mortgage, or a loan to start your own business.

Of course, if you misuse this credit ? such as by making payments late (or not at all), or maxing out cards ? the reverse can happen. Mistakes can stay on your credit report for up to seven years and lower your credit score. This score, which represents your credit risk, is based on several factors: your past payment history, total outstanding debt, length of credit history, and the types of loans and credit you have. As you gain experience using a credit card, set a goal to keep your score in the over-700 range. With that score, it is more likely that you will receive preferred rates on car loans and mortgages, as well as have better status when employers or?????. continues on KFMB News 8

Greek coalition has 'basic agreement' on austerity

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? After weeks of fruitless efforts, the heads of the three parties in Greece's governing coalition have struck a basic deal on a new round of harsh austerity measures required for the country to continue getting vital rescue loans, officials said Thursday.

Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras said the long-delayed agreement placed him in a stronger negotiating position ahead of talks Monday with representatives of the country's bailout creditors, who will have the final word on the cutbacks.

He said Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' deliberations with the heads of his two junior coalition partners resulted in "a basic agreement" on the measures intended to ax some ?11.5 billion ($14.8 billion) off state spending in 2013-14.

Under its bailout commitments, Athens must also boost state revenues by an additional ?2 billion over the next two years through tax reform and improved tax collection.

The three-party meeting came a day after more than 50,000 anti-austerity protesters took to the streets of Athens, in a demonstration marred by clashes between hooded anarchist youths and riot police.

Greece has relied on international bailouts since May 2010. In return, it imposed a punishing austerity program, repeatedly slashing incomes, hiking taxes and raising retirement ages. The new measures are expected to include further pension and salary cuts, and raising the age of retirement from 65 to 67.

Approval from European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank officials monitoring the country's three-year effort to right its finances will allow the disbursement of ?31 billion, expected after mid-October.

With that money, whose payment was delayed for months after two successive national elections in May and June, Greece will complete the recapitalization of its battered banking system and pay off long-outstanding debts to domestic suppliers.

Without the cash, the country would have trouble paying its bails. That could force Greece to default on its debts and, possibly, ditch the euro.

The conservative-led coalition has been debating the new cutbacks for about two months, but a deal was delayed by opposition from the two center-left junior partners ? coupled with disagreements with EU, IMF and ECB austerity inspectors.

Fotis Kouvelis, head of the small Democratic Left party, said after Thursday's two-and-a-half hour talks that, despite the overall agreement, "some issues are still outstanding."

And Socialist PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos said he would "struggle to the end to ensure that these measures are not across the board and are fair ... and that they are truly the last," as Samaras has pledged.
