The cynical interpretation was bolstered when Assad?s forces launched their latest, and most savage, assault on Homs on the very eve of a UN Security Council vote to condemn the regime.
Even the fairly mild resolution before the Security Council ? pressing Assad to concede at least some unspecified powers to a deputy, pending the outcome of talks ? was vetoed by Russia. Assad appears to be betting that the international community will be unable to help his suffering people.
On that, he may well be right. Not for nothing did he tell me that his country was the Middle East?s ?fault line? and that ?meddling? in it ?would create an earthquake? another Afghanistan?. There is no doubt that that prospect looms large in the minds of Western policymakers.
In January, he boasted: ?For us, the West is important. But the West today is not like the West a decade ago. The world is changing, and new powers emerging. There are alternatives. We can swim on our own and alongside our friends and brothers, and there are plenty of them.?
Without international help, the Syrian opposition is not yet capable of succeeding on its own. The Syrian National Council, the main external opposition group, has failed to build close enough links with activists inside Syria, and is itself split. ?Assad is becoming stronger with our weakness,? said Haitham Manna, a prominent Syrian dissident based in Cairo. ?If the opposition doesn?t unify, the regime will gain strength.?
This month?s shelling of Homs is part of what appears to be a new security plan, to smash the opposition with brutality. Official newspapers have spoken of shifting away from what they claimed was the previous policy of ?restraint?.
In another sign of the regime?s cynicism, the Homs attacks were launched on the 30th anniversary of the most devastating massacre in Syria?s recent history ? the 1982 shelling and bombing of the rebellious town of Hama, flattening the old city and killing at least 10,000 people. The action, by Bashar?s father, Hafez, pretty much ended all opposition to the Assad family for the next 20 years. The regime clearly intends the parallel to be drawn.
Assad knows he still holds many of the cards. Unlike in Libya, there have been no significant defections from the armed forces or the diplomatic corps. Syrian ambassadors around the world remain loyal. Damascus is still relatively quiet, though there have been demonstrations and security force killings in the suburbs. Some towns controlled by the rebels, such as Zabadani, appear to have been retaken. Nineteen of the 22 Arab states now shun him, but he still has vital support from Lebanon, Iraq, Hezbollah ? and Iran.
Assad may hope to crush the opposition, but his forces are stretched, and have already been rebuffed from the rebel town of Idlib. Nor can Assad ?do a Hama? without the West effectively being forced to intervene.
The likelihood is that Assad?s ?earthquake? will develop, not through foreign military intervention, but of its own accord. Arab Gulf states are already providing the opposition with more weapons. And the role of Turkey, which has turned sharply against its former ally, will be crucial. A Benghazi-style enclave could still be created around Idlib, which is not far from the Turkish border. Syria may degenerate into an Arab version of Bosnia, making some sort of Western intervention inevitable.
Assad can, perhaps, be diverted from his path if the Russians, his principal supporters, can be persuaded to change sides. As in Kosovo, they could be central to a deal, but it would have to include some kind of escape route for Assad.
Interestingly, Assad has not yet been subject to a Gaddafi-style indictment from the International Criminal Court. This may be a sign that he could still be offered an escape hatch. Otherwise, Syria?s future looks dark indeed.

?Our findings both help us understand how breast cancer metastasizes to the lungs and ways to possibly prevent that deadly spread,? says the study?s senior investigator, Dr. Vivek Mittal, an associate professor of cell and developmental biology in cardiothoracic surgery and director of the Neuberger Berman Lung Cancer Laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College.
?These are exciting insights into a poorly investigated area,? Dr. Mittal says. ?There are no clinically approved drugs now that can effectively target metastatic lesions, which is why more than 90 percent of human cancer-related deaths come from spread of the disease from a primary tumor.?
?The results of this study are a critical step in deconstructing the process of metastases ? which is critical to curing our patients,? says co-author Dr. Linda T. Vahdat, professor of medicine, chief of the Solid Tumor Service and director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at Weill Cornell. ?As a direct result of this study, we are working on ways to interrupt the process by which tumors co-opt the infrastructure in our bodies to grow and spread.?
This important study starts to unravel the mechanistic basis of cancer metastases, not only in breast cancer but possibly in other types of cancer, says Dr. Nasser Altorki, the David B. Skinner Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and director of the division of thoracic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. ?The need for a prepared and receptive soil may be required for cancer cell seeding regardless of the primary cancer?s site of origin.?
The Seed and the Soil
Cancer researchers have believed that for a cancer to spread, its ?seed? must find the right ?soil? in a distant organ in order to thrive. And they have hypothesized that this seed is formed through a process known as epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), in which cancer cells lose their sticky grip to other cells in a primary tumor and become more mobile, able to travel through the blood to a distant organ.
But what happens next is conjecture. Scientists have speculated that the cells undergo a reverse process, called mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET), in which the cancer seeds morph back into epithelial cells that can make contact with tissue and integrate in the new organ. Little is known about MET compared to EMT.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? There appears to be no end in sight for Greg Oden and his troublesome knees.
The Portland Trail Blazers center was scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery to "remove debris" from his left knee. The team announced that the former No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft was to have the surgery Monday in Vail, Colo. The often-injured 7-footer had the same procedure on his right knee earlier this month.
Over the course of his NBA career, Oden has had microfracture surgeries on both knees, surgery to repair a fractured left kneecap and now the two procedures this month.
Oden, who has hot played in an NBA game since Dec. 5, 2009, has appeared in 82 career games for the Blazers, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.
It was expected that he might be able to play for the Blazers this season, but a checkup before the start of training camp in December reportedly revealed concerns about a non-weight-bearing ligament in the left knee, further setting back his rehabilitation. Since then, he has turned down repeated interview requests.
Oden was a restricted free agent heading into this season. The Blazers and Oden initially agreed to an $8.9 million qualifying offer for this year, but when the setback was announced the two sides restructured the deal, which was dropped to $1.5 million. He will become an unrestricted free agent following this season.
It was not known when Oden might be able to play again.
Oden was selected over Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant with the top pick in the 2007 draft. The Blazers hoped the former Ohio State star could lead the team ? along with Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge ? to an NBA championship.
But Oden's rookie season was postposed when he required microfracture surgery on his right knee that forced him to miss the 2007-08 season.
Oden's repeated knee problems have drawn comparisons to Sam Bowie, the injury-plagued big man the Blazers selected ahead of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft.
While Bowie played in 76 games his rookie season, averaging 10 points and 8.6 rebounds, he appeared in just 63 games over the next four seasons because of injuries. He missed the entire 1987-88 season. In all, he had five operations on his legs.

In an article published on www.medicalxpress.com, research from the Michigan State University?s Institute for the Study of Youth Sports? has found ?Underserved youth athletes report more life skill and character development when their coaches place greater emphasis on creating caring climates instead of focusing on competition?.
In essence, competitors whose focus is directed to personal self development versus competition with others develop a stronger sense of teamwork and team spirit and also develop important social skills, personal initiative and a sense of identity.
The research was conducted by Daniel Gould and Larry Laurer with the assistance of Ryan Flett.? According to Daniel Gould, ?Our data suggests if coaches want to develop life skills and character in youth, it is important to focus on player self-improvement more so than winning.?
What does this all have to do with pageants and pageant competitions?? Everything! In fact, this is relatable to all and any competitive environments or activities. With anything in life, it is all about balance. If you focus only on winning and beating your peers you create an individual and environment that is not conducive to team spirit or consideration of others, let alone other personal attributes we consider attractive in an individual.? A highly competitive environment can often bring out the worst in people ? especially parents!
The study found that in young athletes between the ages of 10 to 19, the more their coaches focused on creating a caring and task oriented environment, the more positive development was experienced in the athletes, whereas focusing solely on being competitive with all the ?ego? driven emphasis that involves, negative development and experiences were shown.
Gould suggests: ?Coaches should create a climate or atmosphere where kids feel cared about, valued, safe and supported. These positive things should occur while at the same time avoiding the creation of an ego-oriented climate focusing primary attention on comparing themselves to others.?
This is common sense. Who among us has not seen the negative and egotistical behaviors of competitors and their parents when the focus is solely on winning and beating the competition? It is not a pretty sight.
Coaches need to be able to motivate and inspire their young charges and balance their motivation to win with motivation to develop themselves in other areas, such as personal responsibility, controlling their emotions, communication, developing a good character and healthy sportsmanship attitudes, including how to be a good loser or winner.? The emphasis needs to be taken off just winning or losing, but rather developing the athlete as a whole.
For pageant contestants and their parents, this means with or without the aid of a professional coach, instilling self development as the goal as opposed to just beating the other contestants.? We hear so often that a parent has entered their daughter into pageants for their self confidence, but then spend all their time focusing on the ?you must win? attitude.
The attitude needs to be one of focusing on self improvement. Best way to describe this is with swimming time trials.? When swimmers are not competing, they do time trials, the idea of which is to beat their own best times. So in other words, they?re not racing the other swimmers, they are racing and trying to beat themselves!? In doing these time trials, these swimmers are striving to be better without the need or concern of beating their peers.? This is also when some of their best improvements are experienced.
So when young pageant girls enter a pageant, don?t emphasis win-win-win at all costs, or express disappointment if they don?t win.? Don?t say, oh, you only got runner up!? You say, wow, you got runner up, well done!? But you also focus on how improved they were over the last time? they modeled better, their talent was better, or maybe just their turns or their smiles or the way they pivoted was better.? Look for, acknowledge and congratulate your pageant girl on all the small but very important things, but don?t let it just be about their on-stage performance.? Encourage good sportsmanship qualities, too.?
Look for, encourage and acknowledge when your young pageant star has either lost or won gracefully, how she has treated other contestants, how her own self esteem is progressing, her own levels of confidence without ego entering into it.? Walking off that stage without having won anything, but carrying yourself with poise, grace, a smile and a sincere congratulations to the winners is the stuff champions are made of!
These self development skills are every bit as important as the physical on-stage skills required to win pageants.? It is these skills that will help them in life and will give them poise and confidence as well as help them to grow up to be happier, well balanced individuals.

NASA to exchange 'flagship' missions for small-ball projects
NASA is drastically scaling back its Mars exploration initiatives in exchange for smaller, more efficient missions, agency officials say.?
NASA is fundamentally overhauling its Mars exploration strategy, ditching multibillion-dollar "flagship" missions in favor of cheaper, more efficient projects for now, agency officials announced Monday (Feb. 13).
Skip to next paragraphThe decision is a response to diminished funding for robotic exploration going forward. In his?federal budget request?for next year, which was revealed Monday (Feb. 13), President Barack Obama allocated $1.2 billion to NASA's planetary science programs ? a 20 percent cut from the current allotment of $1.5 billion, with further reductions expected over the next several years.
The cut is spurring a shift in NASA thinking about the best way to study Mars in the near term. This shift compels the agency to withdraw from the European-led?ExoMars missions, which aim to launch an orbiter and a drill-toting rover to the Red Planet in 2016 and 2018, respectively.
"Instead, we will develop an integrated strategy to ensure that the next steps for Mars exploration will support science as well as human exploration goals, and potentially take advantage of the 2018-2020 exploration window," NASA chief Charlie Bolden told reporters. The new direction does not imperil NASA's $2.5 billion?Mars Science Laboratory?(MSL) mission, which will drop the 1-ton Curiosity rover onto the Martian surface this August to investigate if the Red Planet can, or ever did, support microbial life.
Nor does it affect the $485 million MAVEN mission, due to launch in late 2013 to study Mars' upper atmosphere and gather information about how the Red Planet's climate has changed over time.
However, NASA's new strategy acknowledges that the agency won't be launching ambitious, expensive "flagship" missions like MSL toward the Red Planet ? or any other solar system body ? anytime soon.
"A flagship mission in not on the table," said John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for science. "We're looking at building a moderate mission, and it's a partnership looking at synergies between the requirements of human spaceflight, science and the needs to demonstrate technologies that advance other missions in the future."
It makes sense to set up such partnerships, beyond simply spreading costs around the various branches of NASA, agency officials said. NASA has both science and exploration goals at Mars, after all; Obama has tasked the agency with getting humans to the Red Planet by the mid-2030s.

Researchers, universities and solar manufacturers from all over Europe, have teamed up alongside ENIAC Joint Undertaking to create a multinational/multidisciplinary program, ?Energy for a Green Society? (ERG). This is a three-year project looking into topics from sustainable harvesting to smart distribution. These advances include pushing solar-cell efficiency towards 25% and reducing power conversion losses by 20%.
The total cost of the project is ?25.7 million and has been partially funded through a combination of European and national grants, under the rule of ENIAC JU 2010. The participating countries are Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Ireland, The Netherlands, Slovak Republic and United Kingdom.
The ERG has been established to meet Europe?s 2020 climate targets and will address methods of improving solar cell efficiency, reducing power-conversion losses and enhancing energy management strategies. One of the main objectives includes demonstrating commercially viable applications of printable dye-sensitized solar cells, considered to be a low-cost alternative to silicon solutions. The project partners will also research techniques to optimize the use of energy generated by PV systems and smart grids.
?The ERG initiative will contribute to the establishment of a solid electronics design base for Europe and create a set of technology standards for the solar energy sector?, said ERG project coordinator Dr. Francesco Gennaro, also a staff engineer at STMicroelectronics. ?ERG?s goal is to achieve significant efficiency improvements along the whole supply chain from PV panels to grid connection and make them available to all partners.?

Wait! Don't scroll past these words just yet?? you're not suffering from a strange case of deja vu,?there are simply a lot of different Apple rumors and reports floating around right now. One of the stranger bits of gossip in the bunch involves details about an 8-inch version of the iPad.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Apple and its suppliers are currently testing a smaller version of the popular 9.7-inch tablet device:
Officials at some of Apple's suppliers, who declined to be named, said the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has shown them screen designs for a new device with a screen size of around 8 inches, and said it is qualifying suppliers for it.
One of the unnamed sources claims that the "smaller device will have a similar resolution screen as the iPad 2" and that Apple is working with several screen manufacturers in order to produce test panels for the gadget.
There are several things to keep in mind while considering this report?? the most important one being that old habits die hard. Apple has a tendency to test out multiple versions of its devices in order to explore options. This process doesn't mean that every device or iteration tested and studied by the company will make it to the market though.
Also worth remembering is a spiel given by late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs back in 2010. During an earnings call in October of that year, Jobs explained that he didn't think that it's possible to make a great 7-inch tablet. A 9.7-inch device such as the current iPad is "the minimum size required to create great tablet apps," he said, as the WSJ reminds us.
Of course plenty of time has passed since Jobs vehemently rejected the idea of a smaller iPad, and it's possible that the mobile device market has changed in such a way that Apple is genuinely considering an 8-inch device. Either that or the company is simply doing what it has been doing for a long time: Exploring designs, be they committed to building them or not.
