Learn ToRecognize Signs And Symptoms Of Senior Abuse ? Article ...

They may even select home care services that will help them with their personal care needs. Home care allows seniors to help maintain their independence while residing in familiar and comfortable surroundings. Live in senior care is considered among the best alternatives for meeting these important needs. A reputable home care provider offers many live in services that enrich the lives of their clients without worrying about the fear of abuse or neglect.

Senior Abuse

It can be especially devastating to the abused senior when the abuser is a loved one, close relative, or family caregiver. Abuse of all sorts is unacceptable and must be prevented. Reputable home care providers possess the training to watch out for and report senior abuse.

Types of Abuse:

Sexual

Financial and healthcare fraud

Physical

Emotional

Mental

Neglect

Neglect

Providers try to look for warning signs of abuse that go beyond physical bruises. They search for indications of neglect and mistreatment. Seniors who are neglected don?t have what?s needed to live in a dignified and comfortable way. Their living conditions may be unsafe, or they might not have the basic necessities to reside at home.

The signs of neglect:

Appears under weight or malnourished from the lack of nutrition and water.

Lives in unsanitary conditions.

Feels depressed, melancholy or sad.

May have a fear of communicating with others about their condition.

Emotional and Mental Abuse

Seniors who are exposed to emotional and mental abuse will certainly benefit from having the right in home care provider. Caregivers or family members who threaten, berate or intimidate seniors can certainly make older people feel afraid and discouraged. Reputable home health care providers can break the cycle of abuse.

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is the most prevalent and noticeable form of abuse. Hitting, kicking, and other types of violent behavior are the forms of physical abuse. Abused seniors could possibly have bruises, scratches and broken bones. They may even be forcibly restrained or confined to a room, bed or wheelchair.

Reporting Senior Abuse

A number of support systems for elder abuse take anonymous calls from concerned people. The calls often come from aides, nurses and family members who see or suspect abuse. They can report the abuse without fear of attribution from the accused.

Senior Denial

Some seniors may deny the abuse in fear of being left alone or harmed by the abuser. If they do not report the abuse, it is up to others to do so.

Support Services

Advocacy programs provided at hospitals, nursing homes, social services and community resources will help those in need. These places generally place abuse hotline contact numbers in their place of business.

Could bombing Iran push it to build the Bomb?

VIENNA (Reuters) - Pre-emptive military strikes aimed at forcing Iran to abandon its nuclear activities may end up having the opposite effect: convincing the Islamic Republic's leaders they need an atomic arsenal to secure their hold on power.

That is the argument from those in the West and elsewhere who say the negative impact of an Israeli or U.S. attack would eventually outweigh any gains - pushing Iran towards a decision that Western intelligence services believe it has not yet taken.

"It is difficult to see a single action more likely to drive Iran into taking the final decision to acquire nuclear weapons than an attack on the country," the foreign ministers of Sweden and Finland said in an opinion piece in the New York Times.

"And once such a decision was made, it would only be a matter of time before a nuclear-armed Iran became a reality," Carl Bildt and Erkki Tuomioja added.

Israel says Iran's nuclear ambitions are a threat to the Jewish state's very existence and that time is running short to stop Tehran taking the irreversible step of acquiring the bomb.

But an attack may delay Iran's nuclear drive only by a few years and would probably lead to an acceleration of the atomic program, the expulsion of U.N. inspectors and the Iranian people rallying around their leaders, the International Crisis Group think-tank said in a report citing unnamed U.S. officials.

"Once U.N. inspectors are expelled, Iran could reconstitute its nuclear infrastructure, this time unambiguously geared to producing a bomb," ICG analyst Ali Vaez told Reuters.

A similar message came from former CIA director Michael Hayden, who said the George W. Bush administration had concluded that a strike on the Islamic Republic's nuclear sites was a bad idea, according to a Foreign Policy magazine blog.

An attack would guarantee the very thing that the West was trying to prevent - "an Iran that will spare nothing to build a nuclear weapon and that would build it in secret", Hayden was quoted as telling reporters and experts in January.

Iran is relatively weak in conventional weaponry, compared to Israel and other Middle Eastern states, and may feel it has little choice but to develop nuclear bombs if "pushed into a corner", said military researcher Pieter Wezeman.

"If Israel or the U.S. would try to attack Iran and its strategic centers and its industry, Iran basically does not have the conventional means to defend itself," Wezeman, of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, told Reuters.

"Based on that weakness they are likely to find nuclear arms an interesting option. They don't want to be seen as losers, not internationally and not within Iran."

Any such feeling of military vulnerability in Iran - which often accuses adversaries of plotting to overturn its Islamic Revolution - would be compounded by Israel's assumed nuclear arsenal and the still strong presence of U.S. armed forces in the volatile Gulf region.

TALKS MAY OFFER "BREATHING SPACE"

There is general agreement among Western powers that Iran has already taken steps that would give it the option of becoming a nuclear-armed power, if it so decided.

It has ramped up its uranium enrichment, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said last month, voicing "serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions" to the nuclear activities.

Western experts say Iran now has enough refined uranium -material which can yield energy or weapons, depending on the level of enrichment - for four bombs if processed much further.

Crucially, however, the U.S. administration has concluded that Iranian leaders have not decided whether to actively construct a nuclear weapon, current and former officials have told Reuters.

"The U.S. intel community says with high confidence that Iran has made a capability decision, not a bomb decision," said Jim Walsh, a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). "Bombing them will produce a bomb decision, and that will be very difficult to stop."

Iran expert Trita Parsi said: "You can't convince a country that it doesn't need a nuclear deterrence by bombing it."

But Bruno Tertrais of the Strategic Research Foundation, a French think-tank, said nobody could claim to know the impact of an attack and he suggested it could be difficult for Iran to launch a nuclear weapons bid afterwards.

"Iran would be closely monitored and would then take the risk to be bombed again, before it actually produces deliverable weapons," Tertrais said.

"One needs to differentiate between an Israeli and a U.S. operation: the latter would be bigger, leave few stones unturned, and might very well shake up the foundations of the regime."

Israel has threatened Tehran with pre-emptive strikes if diplomacy fails to stop its nuclear progress. U.S. President Barack Obama says all options are on the table, including possible military action, in dealing with Tehran.

Israel worries that Iran will soon have moved enough of its nuclear program underground as to make it virtually impervious to a unilateral Israeli attack, creating what Defence Minister Ehud Barak has referred to as a "zone of immunity".

But Obama - who has accused U.S. Republican presidential candidates of "beating the drums of war" while failing to consider the consequences - is also encouraging Israel to give sanctions against Iran more time to have an effect.

The Jewish state this week played down the prospect of an imminent attack, saying Iran's nuclear program could still be set back by sanctions and sabotage.

Six world powers and Iran are in mid-April expected to resume long-stalled negotiations aimed at finding a diplomatic resolution to the nuclear dispute, a dialogue which may for now cool speculation of imminent war [ID:nL6E8ES1DU]

"I'm not optimistic on the talks, but I do think they could at the very least open a temporary breathing space for all sides," said Gala Riani of risk consultancy Control Risks.

NUCLEAR DETERRENCE

If Israel in the end decides to strike, Vaez of the International Crisis Group said "it was easy to imagine" that Iran would withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a 1970 pact to prevent the spread of atomic weapons.

Iran's envoy to the U.N. nuclear agency, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, warned this month that any attack by a non-NPT member - Israel - on the nuclear sites of a country that is party to the treaty would inevitably lead to the pact's "collapse."

MIT's Walsh said Iran might need years to recover from an attack but it would not destroy its know-how and would "present a window of opportunity for pro-bomb advocates" in the country.

Short of a full-scale war or occupation, "most military options are oversold as to their ability to end or even significantly delay Iran's nuclear program," the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) said.

A vast country, Iran has dispersed its program across many facilities, some whose locations may remain secret.

"An ineffective bombing campaign ... would leave Iran able to quickly rebuild its program and motivate it to launch its own Manhattan Project," the Washington-based think-tank said, referring to the U.S. atomic bomb program in World War Two.

But the view in Israel is that any action that can delay nuclear militarization is beneficial, "because it might maximize opportunities for other events, such as regime change in Iran", the International Crisis Group report said.

Iran, a major oil producer that denies any nuclear weapons aims and officially condemns nuclear weaponry as a "great sin", says it needs uranium enriched to a low level to fuel a planned network of nuclear power plants.

It came under intensifying Western sanctions pressure after the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in a November report, presented a trove of intelligence pointing to activities in Iran relevant for nuclear weapons development.

Former IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei said he still did not see "incontrovertible evidence" that Iran was working on an atomic bomb and that the question of whether it intends to make one was a matter of opinion and debate.

He said an attack would be a "sure way for Iran to go on a crash course to build nuclear weapons with the full support of the Iranian people ... and with the most catastrophic consequences for the Middle East and the rest of the world."

ElBaradei, who ran the IAEA for 12 years to the end of 2009, was outspoken in his skepticism of Western intelligence after erroneous reports about secret weapons of mass destruction in Iraq were used by the United States to justify the 2003 invasion that overthrew Saddam Hussein.

The risks posed by Iran's nuclear program "need not be hyped," he said in an email to Reuters. "We should by now have learned some lessons from the Iraq disaster."

The Pong Indie Developer Challenge commenced one month ago today, February 28, and runs until April 15. The total amount up for grabs exceeds $100,000; second place gets $37,500; third place $15,000; and $5,000 goes to the remaining seven finalists.?

A panel of game industry veterans, including Nolan Bushnell -- who not only founded Atari but also brought electronic table tennis to the mass market in the first place -- will judge the games. In addition to the cash prizes, any game (not just first prize) Atari sees fit to publish will reward the developers with revenue sharing, for up to three years according to The Unofficial Apple Weblog.?

For many years, Atari has attempted to update "Pong" in various ways, but most have never caught on. When the initial "Pong" craze started to subside, a number of follow-ups were produced: "Super Pong," "Pong Doubles," "Quadrapong," and "Pin-Pong." Only its one-player variant, "Breakout," was received warmly by the public. But it plays so differently most are unaware it has a predecessor.?

In 1999, Atari produced "Pong: The Next Level" to help reignite interest in the franchise, with power-ups and new gameplay modes added to the formula, but the reception was cold. Since then, the original formula has remained untouched. It appears regularly in compilations, alongside other titles from the game's easiest days.

One example is "Retro Atari Classics" for the original DS; the visuals were updated by a prominent street artist, as were all the other offerings, but the game played exactly the same as it did in 1972. That will be the real challenge for today's indie developers: to see if they can teach an old dog a new trick, while staying true to its original essence.

More than one billion stars in the Milky Way can be seen together in detail for the first time in an image captured by astronomers

More than one billion stars in the Milky Way can be seen together in detail for the first time in an image captured by astronomers.

Scientists created the colour picture by combining infra-red light images from telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres. Large structures of the Milky Way galaxy, such as gas and dust clouds where stars have formed and died, can be seen in the image.

The picture represents part of a 10-year project involving scientists from the UK, Europe and Chile, who gathered data from the two telescopes. The information has been processed and archived by teams at the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge, who have made it available to astronomers around the world for further studies.

Archived information from the project known as the VISTA Data Flow System is expected to enable scientists to carry out groundbreaking research in future years without the need to generate further data.

The image is being presented at the National Astronomy Meeting in Manchester today (Thursday 29 March). It shows the plane of the Milky Way galaxy, which is often described as looking like two fried eggs back-to-back, with a flat disc in the middle. Earth is close to the edge of this disc, and the image shows a cross-section through the disc as seen from Earth's perspective.

It combines data from the UKIDSS/GPS sky survey taken by the UK Infrared Telescope in Hawaii with the VVV survey from the VISTA telescope in Chile.

Astronomers used infra-red radiation instead of visible light to enable them to see through much of the dust in the Milky Way and record details of the centre of the galaxy.

Scientists have published the image online with an interactive zoom tool that reveals the detail within. Zooming into the image reveals a tiny fraction of the entire picture, which alone contains more than 10,000 stars.

The work was supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Dr Nick Cross, of the University of Edinburgh's School of Physics and Astronomy, said: "This incredible image gives us a new perspective of our galaxy, and illustrates the far-reaching discoveries we can make from large sky surveys. Having data processed, archived and published by dedicated teams leaves other scientists free to concentrate on using the data, and is a very cost-effective way to do astronomy."

P-P-Professor Chaos!

1) What's your username? Why'd you pick that username?
My username is ProfessorChaos. It's inspired by Butters, of South Park, of course, and his supervillain identity, Professor Chaos. :)

2) How'd you find this place? Google? Why'd you look it up on Google or whatever?
I got it from a friend who apparently was here a while back.

3) How long have you roleplayed on forums or chat? On what sites? Did you start with tabletop games or such?
I've RPed for.....a long time, since I was real little XD I've, to be honest, never done tabletop, but I've RPed on my own personal sites and some on proboards.

4) In coming to RPG, what've you been looking for specifically? A new home for roleplay? Better roleplay?
Um....active roleplay, and hopefully nice roleplay too. Looks professional so far and I'm cool with that >w<

5) What kinds of roleplay are you interested in? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Go in-depth about it if you want.
I'm interested in canon-based roleplay -- I like roleplaying based on crossovers, anime, etc. I also like original roleplay -- especially fantasy inspired ones. It's got to be really cool.

6) What're your hobbies? Do you collect rocks or mount insects?
I collect turtles. I also like to play piano.

7) What's something you're good at besides writing? Maybe you're on the volleyball team or you're a quick learner? Maybe you play the flute or can fold up chairs amazingly fast? xD
I'm a actress and a singer. I can also eat toast really fast >W<

8) Do you have any friends here at RPG that invited you here? Would you want to make more friends while you're here?
Penny -- Pendulumwriter -- invited me here. I would like to make more friends, yes.

And lastly...

9) Do we get cookies for looking through your thread and saying hello?

Um, no. But have some toast. *hands you toast*

A Warning to Investors: Don't Get TVIX'ed! Says Macke | Breakout ...

Regardless of whether it made it to the front page of your business section, the biggest news story by far over the last two trading days has been the collapse of the VelocityShares 2x Daily VIX Short Term Exchange Traded Note (TVIX), invariably referred to as the T-Vix ("Tea-Vicks").

The Exchange Traded Note, or ETN, was issued by Credit Suisse (CS) and designed as a vehicle for trading the volatility of the S&P 500 (^VIX) on a levered basis. In theory, if the VIX rose 10% in a day the TVIX would gain twice that amount.

Over the last two days the TVIX lost over 40% of its value. The implosion of the TVIX casts a light on the murky underbelly of the ETF and ETN industry.

Lee Munson and Jon Najarian, among other Breakout guests, have previous discussed concerns over ETFs and ETNs.

Najarian, the co-founder of TradeMonster.com gave me his thoughts on how levered products work in general and the the TVIX collapse in particular via email this morning:

"ETFs and ETNs are fairly vanilla products, they do what they're supposed to do, track performance of an index, future etc.

All that changes with these levered ETFs & ETNs. With those the price resets every single day. As a result, if you hold during a 30 percent market move that unfolds over 3 to 6 months, the levered ETF or ETN will NOT track that change.

It's that daily reset that makes these levered products not suitable for long-term investing. They are great for short-term hedging, or for adding alpha to your day trading, but not for long-term holding!

Credit Suisse ceased creation of the notes on February 21st. [In effect ceasing to be a market maker of the TVIX, allowing them to disconnect from any hypothetical underlying value]. Both the creation issue and the daily reset are to blame for the TVIX. The crazy pricing and trading of that ETN since Credit Suisse stopped creating the TVIX caused them to hold a value significantly higher than was warranted until the past two sessions when the ETN fell to earth."

Credit Suisse bears much of the blame for what happened to the TVIX, but investors had ample warning. The firms itself laid out many of the risks on page one of the TVIX prospectus, noting that the ETN:

"Should be purchased only by knowledgeable investors who understand the potential consequences of investing in volatility indices and of seeking inverse or leveraged investment results, as applicable"

"May not be suitable for investors who plan to hold them for longer than one day"

"In almost any potential scenario the Closing Indicative of your ETNs is likely to be close to zero after 20 years."

Investors ignoring the warnings of the TVIX issuer itself could have found prescient insights from Adam Warner, FT Alphaville.com or any number of other sources.

The TVIX disaster is appalling and an embarrassment to all of Wall Street, but it was avoidable for investors. If you didn't avoid this nightmare you need to learn from it anyway.

Too many people are rushing into these poorly designed instruments and getting hurt. The burden is on regulators to make these problems go away but it's also on individuals to understand what they're buying and selling.

There is no free lunch on Wall Street or anywhere else. Don't trust anything you're being told or sold with your own money. Don't wait for the SEC to come in and do your homework; protect yourself by doing the research before you get TVIX'ed.

U.S. on track for Afghan deal by NATO summit: Clinton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Wednesday it appears to be on track to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Afghanistan charting their future relations during or before a late May NATO summit.

U.S. and Afghan officials have been trying to negotiate an accord for a long-term U.S. presence in Afghanistan beyond a 2014 deadline for most NATO combat forces to withdraw, allowing advisers and possibly some special forces to stay on.

The two countries earlier signed a deal on the transfer of a major U.S.-run prison to Afghan authority, leaving military raids on Afghan homes conducted at night as the final sticking point for reaching a deal.

"We've made good progress the last few weeks," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at a news conference with Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmay Rasool, citing the detentions pact.

"We are looking forward to finalizing the so-called night raids agreement. These are complicated issues but we are resolving them. We are clearing the way toward a strategic partnership agreement," she added. "We would very much like to be in a position to sign such an agreement ... either before or at the Chicago summit and I think we are on track to do so."

The two sides appear close to reaching agreement on a memorandum of understanding on the night raids, which would give Afghan authorities the right to veto any such raid and would put highly trained Afghan special forces in the lead for all raids, with support from Western troops.

More than a decade after Afghanistan's Taliban government was toppled following the September 11 attacks, the United States and its allies face a resilient insurgency, a weak Afghan government, and an uncertain future for Western support.

U.S.-Afghan relations have been badly strained this year by a March 11 incident in which a U.S. soldier is suspected of killing 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children, and by the burning of copies of the Koran at NATO's main base in the country, which sparked a week of rioting that left dozens dead.

U.S. efforts to promote peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban also appear to have bogged down.

On March 15, the Afghan Taliban said it was suspending nascent peace talks with the United States that were seen as a way to end the country's decade-long conflict, blaming "shaky, erratic and vague" U.S. statements.

The Taliban decision was a blow to NATO hopes of a negotiated end to the war, which has cost the United States $510 billion and the lives of more than 1,900 soldiers.

"Our only goal is to open the door for Afghans to sit down with other Afghans and to work out the future for their country," Clinton said, repeating U.S. demands that the Taliban break ties with al Qaeda, renounce violence and respect the Afghan constitution, including rights of women and minorities.

The producers of "The Book of Mormon" said Wednesday they'll celebrate the show's anniversary by handing out seats to a free matinee performance on June 6 for whoever survives a ticket lottery.

Starting Wednesday through May 20, all lottery entries, win or lose, will count as one entry in the sweepstakes toward winning tickets for the free show.

In-depth Study on Social Networking ? Reason for Social ...

    Man is a social animal!!!
In recently conducted leading Research Center?s Internet & American Life Project report released ?The Social Side of Internet? affirms the role of social media on the Internet being the traction in keeping people active to take up active role in voluntary group or organizations. The percentage is more that three-fourths in the population that has taken up such voluntary activities. Such is the importance of social media build up on the Internet. Commenting on the report research director Pew Internet and co-author of the report Kristen Purcell said ?Many enjoy the social dimensions of involvement, but what they really want is to have impact. Most have felt proud of a group they belong to in the past year and just under half say they accomplished something they couldn?t have accomplished on their own.?

The United States is one of the most socio-economically developed nations which sets up new paradigm is the new world. Human societies and communities across the world look at what the most achieved are doing that to the political demagogue?s preaching. Man is a social animal and no man can achieve anything in solitary. The research findings even more than for America underline what human societies need and aspire for. The social media on the Internet has accelerated the process for the commonest of the common in the world to come together through connectivity and contacts to achieve something so simple he wants, sharing, coexistence, and purposeful relationship and long lasting friendship.

Not an UN-viable proposition but something what men as technologists, innovators, and builders of bridges for the people of the world, social networking has achieved the unimaginable. To study the effect of socio-economic impact of social networking has to go a long way, but in the meanwhile people or the world?s have made the paradigm shift that the tools technologists have provided. They have used the social networking media pied piper for those seeking businesses, creative ideas, professionals, markets, innovations and what they to just on the bandwagon and go gaga about achieving their purposes.

The evolving relationship opens up door of immense opportunities to survive, prove and impact socio-economic life of communities. These social networking sites? give the privilege of developing you hobbies, provide guidance to supplementing academic pursuits, give you the chance to seek second opinion of decisions, allows you develop personal relationships, friendships, allows undertake cultural exchanges, share personal creativity, share concern for causes, resolve conflicts and disputes, soothe hurt feelings, make the extended world know your unknown worth, clarify long pending doubts, build confidence, and instill a sense of belongingness to the wider world.

If these are valid reasons for human to come together, social networking sites are attempt to make a better place the social animal.
